QR code on a product label

A label has little room; a QR code opens everything else: the full manual, recipes, where the ingredients come from, an assembly video. On a product printed by the thousand, it has to last.

Fill in the fields to see your QR.

Static QR: free and works forever, but it can't be edited and its scans aren't counted.

Make an editable version with statistics

Why an editable code on packaging?

Because a label printed in bulk lives for months, sometimes years, while links move: website redesigns, new manuals, pages that change address. With an editable code you change the destination without reprinting a single box.

The method is in editing a printed QR code. Static QR codes are free and unlimited. For editable QR codes with statistics: 1 is free, then Starter at €6.90 a month (15 editable QR codes), Pro at €12.90 a month (100) or Business at €39 a month (500). Billed yearly, that’s €5.90, €11 and €33 a month.

What should a product code lead to?

Whatever doesn’t fit on the label: the full manual, an assembly or care video, recipes, material sourcing, recycling tips, customer service, a review request.

A PDF manual has to be online elsewhere (Scanotte doesn’t host files); see the QR code for a PDF. A multi-link page can group several of these.

Does the QR code replace the barcode?

No. The retail barcode (EAN or UPC) is for the checkout and stock control; your Scanotte code is for your customers. Both sit on the label.

Leave enough space between them so a phone doesn’t mix them up, and add a line under the code (“Manual and videos”) so shoppers don’t mistake it for a technical code.

What size and print for a label?

At least 2 cm (about 0.8 in), more if the pack is curved (bottle, jar) or glossy. A matte light background and dark dots read best. See the minimum QR code size for edge cases.

Give your printer the SVG file and test a real prototype with two phones, ideally under shop lighting. For brand colours, see readable coloured QR codes.

What will the statistics tell me?

How often the code is scanned, when, on which devices and roughly in which countries. One code per product or range tells you which content people actually want.

For each scan, Scanotte records the date, the type of device, the operating system and the approximate country. It never keeps the IP address and sets no cookie on the people who scan; link previews (WhatsApp, Slack…) aren’t counted.

What if the product is sold for years?

Plan for the long run: keep the page behind the code alive, and check now and then that it still loads. If you redesign your site, point the code to the new page.

Remember the cancellation rule too: If you stop paying, nothing dies overnight: whatever fits the free plan keeps working as usual, and the rest keeps redirecting, read-only, for 12 months before showing an “expired” page. Picking a plan again brings everything back.

Frequently asked questions

How many editable codes do I need?

One per different destination. The free plan gives 1, Starter 15, Pro 100 and Business 500.

Can Scanotte generate codes in bulk from a file?

No, there’s no CSV import: each code is made in the app. For a handful of ranges, it’s still quick.

Can the code point to my online shop?

Yes, to any web page: product page, shop, loyalty programme.

Does a glossy label cause problems?

It can, through reflections. Test under real lighting, and prefer a matte area for the code if you can.
