My QR code isn’t working

A broken QR code either won’t scan, or scans but leads to the wrong place. Those two problems have completely different causes.

How do I find where the problem is?

Scan the code with two different phones. If neither reacts, it’s a reading problem; if an address shows but the page errors, it’s a destination problem.

Note the address shown on scanning: it tells you whether the code is static (your site) or dynamic (a service’s short address).

What if the code won’t scan at all?

Check the size, contrast, print condition and the white margin around it. A code that’s too small, sun-faded, folded, glossy or colour-inverted reads badly.

The right settings are in the minimum QR code size and readable coloured QR codes. If it has a logo, try a version without it to compare.

  • Size: at least 2 cm (0.8 in), more if scanned from afar.
  • Contrast: dark dots on a light background.
  • Margin: a light border all the way round.
  • Surface: no folds, glare or strong curvature.

What if it leads to an error page?

If your own site says “page not found”, the page was moved or deleted: put it back or add a redirect on your site. If it’s a shared file, check the link is still public.

If it’s a page from the QR service (trial ended, account inactive), the dynamic code has been switched off: reactivate the account or make a new code. See do QR codes expire?.

What if it’s a Scanotte code?

A Scanotte code can show “Link expired” if its owner has had no plan covering it for more than 12 months; picking a plan again reactivates it. It can also show a warning if its destination was blocked as dangerous.

If a page opens but it’s the wrong one, just change the destination, as explained in editing a printed QR code.

A Wi-Fi code that no longer connects?

The password or network name has probably changed: a Wi-Fi code is static, so you need a new one. Also check the security type and the exact spelling of the network name.

You can remake it for free with the Wi-Fi QR code generator.

How do I stop it happening again?

Test every code on a printed proof with two phones before the full run, and keep a list of where each code points. For anything printed in quantity, use an editable code so a moved page never means a reprint.

Check your destination pages now and then, especially after a website redesign: that’s when links most often break.

Frequently asked questions

Can a QR code wear out?

Yes: fading, scratches, stains. Error correction makes up for some damage, not all of it.

Why does my iPhone read it but not my Android?

Usually contrast, size or the camera app. Make the code bigger and the contrast stronger.

My code leads to an ad first. Is that normal?

Some free services show an interstitial page. At Scanotte, the redirect goes straight to your destination.

Can a printed code be fixed?

If it’s dynamic, change the destination. If it’s unreadable, it has to be reprinted.
